I turned into an evil fire demon... srly... lava beams shot from my eyes and mouth. >:(
So, yesterday I went and did something I've been threatening to do for several months now. It started with TARP, and the banking bailout. Then the silence on war crimes prosecutions. The credit card legislation didn't help either... Then health care happened. Or rather, health care did not happen.
It started to happen. Obama said we were going to look at all possibilities in terms of covering everyone and reining in cost. Then, at the very first hearing on reform, advocates for single payer were not invited. In fact, when some of them showed up, they were arrested. Hauled away in handcuffs. FirstAmendmentLolWhut? Little did we know, at this same time Obama and Rahm were negotiating in secret with Big Pharma, asking them what they would charge to allow the White House to pass a vanity health care bill. The cost? Billions in tax giveaways and a ban on the re-importation of drugs from Canada.
Then we had the teabag summer from Hell. Deranged white racists, screaming about Nazis and communist health care... shit was so far off from reality they might as well have been saying the government was planning to implant everyone with Xenomorphs. The bad news? They won. The good news? They're too batshit crazy to notice (and thus gloat) and are still out there screaming at the moon about jellobeasts and Freemasons planting listening devices in toaster strudel.
Then the cave in starts. The strong public option becomes the weak public option. The weak public option becomes opt-out weak public option, which becomes the weak opt-in pubic option, which becomes the triggered weak opt-in public option, which becomes the medicare buy-in only for those over 55, which then becomes nothing. Nothing at all.
Only a law saying you have to buy insurance. If you don't, you'll be fined. If you don't pay the fines, you go to jail. Oh, and did I mention that all the cost controls are gone? Yeah, they can charge whatever they want... and you better pay up. Or else.
Throughout the course of this, I randomly toyed with the idea of dropping my membership in a few democratic groups. Renouncing the party and finding a political home elsewhere. After the Lieberman debacle, tho, I lost my mind. The white house did nothing but lick the butthole of a man who spent 2008 palling around McCain/Palin and calling Obama a traitor. Then later on, when Howard Dean criticizes the mandate, the white house attacks him, saying he's "irrational" and "irresponsible". Right, the guy who calls you out on another corporate giveaway (this administration's third, btw) is "irrational" and the guy who gives your entire presidency a brutal unlubricated assfisting? You personally thank him.
What. The. Fuck?
So, I finally did it. I sent furious letters (the most venomous I saved for OFA itself), I unsubbed from email lists, I'm done. I know no one gives a shit, but I *totally* feel better and that's frankly important to me right now. :P
And just to make sure I don't wander back, I joined the Green Party. Yeah, I know, but still.
And to drive the point home, as I write this Keith Olbermann and Lawrence O'Donnell are talking about an interview Obama did this evening, in which he - purportedly - said "If we fail to pass this reform, the US government will go bankrupt".
In other words, "the [insurance] smoking gun will come in the form of an [economic] mushroom cloud." Support my corporate war/bailout or DISASTER WILL DESCEND UPON YOU ALL!!!!
*shakes head* We've been to this dance before, haven't we?
