So for the millionth time, sorry readers, here's my cosplay for Animazement 2010:

from left: Mika (Friday), Yui (friday night), Yomiko (Sunday), Yuni (Saturday) (wow, lots of y names!)

As I have nothing better to do, I revised the "Ten cosplays you want to do next"

Top Left: Haruhi from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Shizuru from My-HiME, Yumi from Chobits (vers.2), Sachiko from Maria-sama ga Miteru, Ryomo Shinmei in school uniform from Ikkitousen, Kano from Air TV
Bottom left: Kagami Rin from Vocaloid, Rabi~en~Rose from Digi Charat, Koyori from Nurse Witch Komugi-chan, Akane from Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien

Haruhi is sooooo overdone, but I identify with the character so much I feel the need to cosplay her. I might cosplay Shizuru from My-HiME if I had a group (especially if I had a Natsuki). Maybe I'll have people to go to AWA 2010, or AUSA or Nekocon. I know, I'm thinking far ahead, but I can't afford any other cons this year at ALL.

I just replied in a thread on Cosplay.com forums about the 10 cosplays you want to do next. I have four "in the pocket" (is that a good way to put it?) so here's my list in absolutely no order:

Kano from Air TV
Koyori from Nurse Witch Komugi-chan
Haruhi from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Yumi from Chobits (vers.2)
Ryomo Shinmei in school uniform from Ikkitousen
Sailor Jupiter in school uniform from Sailor Moon (vers.2)
Rabi~en~Rose from Digi Charat
Kagami Rin from Vocaloid
Large girl (there's one large girl in the class lol) from My-HiME
Anthy from Utena (some day...)
EDIT: Akane from Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien / Rumbling Hearts

Of course, there might be other shows that come out might replace these XD

I wonder if I already posted this stuff...

Here's the list of anime I've been watching lately, and the cosplay potential.

My-HiME:
I should cosplay Shizuru. Cause she's a lesbian, and I am too, and I might go crazy if the person I've been crushing on for years suddenly found out and yelled "No aaaahhh!" I'm not sure if I would go psychopath over it, but I'd still be a lesbian, and also popular and president of the student council. But long sleeves might suck.

My Otome
Just... no. I like maid costumes as much as the next person, but just no. Plus it would look weird with my figure.

Ai Yori Aoshi
Love it, but don't see much potential. I'm too big for a kimono, the maid's hair is a weird color, the american wears little clothing and grabs EVERYONE's boobies. I might get kicked out for that.

Escaflowne:
Love this show, but really don't see any cosplay potential. I like the main char best but don't like her uniform, I don't really like the cat, and all the other female leads I just... don't like. I like their place in the show, I just don't see myself in their place.

Chobits
I did a Yumi costume, but I lost the wig and possibly the hat, need a better shirt, need a matching skirt... but I have the boots and the backpack -_- I need a chobits group though - when I first made the costume no one recognized me, including some of the Chiis.

Did I mention I have no cons coming up, and I would just be working on costumes for the hell of it? le sigh.

first post in a LONG time!

I haven't been keeping up with new anime, which means I haven't kept up with new costumes. So, my cosplaylab in-progress page is full of not-so-new costumes. You know, the ones people do ten minutes after they see the first episode, then never re-wear them or sell them. Btw, the inprogress page only has 3 costumes, but I've actually got 7.

In no particular order, here are the costumes I want to do:

Kagamine Rin from Vocaloid

(it's a sailor uniform in dark grey, with a treble symbol on the top. The belt has some triangle detail, the arm-warmers have some green stuff on them, and the headphones I think can be made with foam (we shall see!) This is actually last on my list, I'd rather do it with a group.

Kano from Air

I love this series, character, and uniform :D it's a two-piece uniform, so that should make things easier x_x

Sachiko from Maria-sama ga Miteru

Low waistline, so we'll see how this looks lol

Yomiko from Read or Die

Already have the wig yay!

Yuni from DDR Supernova

I was going to do my favorite character, Emi, but a friend wanted to be her, so I found my second-favorite character. She's got a mess of plaid and stuff on, and she doesn't really match, and I don't know HOW I'm going to get stars on one leg and stripes on the other! Also I'll be a brunette with long fake pigtales that match my hair. I didn't want to get a custom wig, and I don't know how to weft and stuff. I have most of the parts of this costume, and it just needs to be finished. Except the leggings - have I mentioned I have no idea what to do?

Last and most important, Mika from MiniMoni's Crazy About You:

I have all the accessories. I have the pants. I have the pieces cut for the jacket. So why haven't I finished this damn thing?!

Also, I've decided being a plus-size cosplayer is going to be my "thing". You see plenty of thin cosplayers, I'm going to embrace my size and not wait to do costumes "because I'm too fat". Screw that! I'll lengthen shirts and skirts, I'll pick costumes that work for me. I'm tired of waiting.

tips for plus-size cosplayers

There was a thread about Plus-size cosplayers on cosplay.com, and I thought I'd share my post with y'all.

Plus-sized cosplay... it isn't about looking thinner. It's about looking good in your costume. Don't spend all your time thinking about how big you look. I personally haven't done any costumes that could make me look thinner (dark colors, flowy dresses, etc).

COMFORT is key for plus-sizes, I think. If you're wearing something you feel uncomfy in... thinking "I'm too fat" or "this shows too much leg" or "I have to wear something to squish in my stomache", you'll just be worrying about how you look all day (which sucks, I've done that before), and then you look unhappy and grumpy.

I've never had anyone say anything bad to my face, and I have very supportive friends who will tell me if something looks bad (so I can fix it), but there's threads on 4chan all the time about 'fat cosplayers'. I hate when people say "grow a thick skin!" because that's crap, it's going to hurt when people say bad things about you. Just remember it's not really YOU they're whining about, it's 'fat cosplayers' in general.

Um... what else. Everyone's said the tips I can think of - alternate costumes, seamlines, etc. OH! Make a duct tape dress form! Very helpful when editing patterns (35 inch waist is a size 20? YEAH RIGHT SIMPLICITY).

I am seriously thinking of cosplay Tsuruya instead of Haruhi. The problem would be a $50 wig.

And if I can (I REALLY REALLY WANT TO), I'll do Ryomou's school uniform. I want every Ryomou costume! There's only two, but still! It might be smarter to just fix up the one I have, huh?

Next time I do any sort of costume that requires similar colors on the top and bottom, I'm making it from scratch. THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THIS DAMN HARD.

My green hoodie I got for my Yoshi costume is very nice, and I didn't want to mess it up. Also, I couldn't find a green pair of pants anywhere NEAR the same color.
At an outlet mall, I found a sweatshirt that was a brighter green, AND only $7. I figured it would be easier to match, right? So I got some expensive green fabric to make the tail and such, and my mom helped me dye two pairs of pants, to see which would be a closer color.

Both pants were way too light after washing. We got more dye. They were very dark. Like, totally wrong shade dark. Dark in that shade of green wouldn't have been so bad, but these were closer to greenbrown than greenblue. So I freak out for a few minutes, until I discover... one of the pairs is the EXACT color of my original green sweatshirt.

Then I spent half an hour freaking out and not knowing what to do. I dug through the trash looking for my recipt for the (expensive) green fabric, so I could return it, with no luck. So now, I have the perfect shade green sweatshirt/pants match, and the perfect shade sweatshirt/fabric match, and I'm screwed either way.

I'll go to the fabric store today to see if I can find a green to match the old sweatshirt. If I can't, I'm screwed again. Ugh.

NEW COSPLAY JOURNAL ICON WOOT

You know what's a dumb idea? To decide a new costume a few weeks before the con, and then realize you have THIS weekend and NEXT weekend to work on it.

I'm almost done with my Haruhi skirt (woot!). I have to sew things together, and make a belt, and uh... START the top x_x I had to put interfacing on the waistband and belt loops, and it wasn't hard! So my hatred of interfacing is waining. I've figured out how to do the top, it's just actually MAKING it that will be the challenge. The headband will be easy, but I want a more yellow-orange fabric than the one I got. The goal is to finish up Haruhi today.

Yoshi has not been STARTED. Kero-chan needs new wings, a tail, and ears - and I need to decide whether or not to use the yellow hoodie I have (which is kind of small), or buy a new one (or a white one to dye, or whatever). I should have just gotten a white hoodie and white pants for Yoshi and dyed them together, the pants aren't going to match the top. Grr.

Uh, what else... I have a to-buy list for Yoshi and Kero, but it's in my car, and I'm too lazy to go get it.

AnimeUSA final list: Kero-chan, Mini-Moni, White Mage, Yoshi, and Haruhi! I'm still not quite sure when to wear what x_x

Work to do:
Kero-chan - New wings, new ears, new tail, a new hoodie would be nice (but I doubt it'll happen)
Mini-Moni - Fix up shirt (possibly wear long-sleeve?), fix MiniMo thingy on front
White Mage - fix hood, add white to inside-bottom (to hide red pieces)
Yoshi - basically everything x_x
Haruhi - also basically everything x_x

I made sketches for the Yoshi costume, and now know what I need for everything. Unfortunately, my sketches are in my car, and Ulla the kitten is currently asleep in my lap, so I can't get up to go get it.

Today's goal is to work hard on my Haruhi costume. Finishing it would be nice, but I doubt it'll happen. Sorata (aka Scottie) did the SOS-DAN armband painting for me, which I am eternally grateful of.

Susan (who might read this journal, I don't remember) hasn't been able to start yet. I think the shirt'll be easy, and the skirt won't be hard for someone who can sew... I just don't have the time to make the skirt X_X Also, I only know how to edit dress and skirt patterns for my body type, I'm not good enough to do it for other people yet x_x

AnimeUSA lists (comfy costumes rule)

Sometimes, I'll find a cosplayer who did a costume I want to do, who does it so well that I don't want to do the costume anymore -_-
A few cases of this: Heza-chan's Magical Maid Koyori (look at her PROPS for god's sake! It's perfect!); DEANNA's Ryomou Shinmei (she goes to Animazement, and I was embarrased to wear my Ryomou costume with her there); and Fenicia's Misha.

Am I the only one that does that?

Have you ever seen a costume on a jpop star or an anime, and just got HUNGRY to make it? I've done that with two of Rika Ishikawa's Eco-Moni costumes. Rika is in green, Sayumi is in blue.

Here's the first one - I have the cowboy hat, and a wig that'll work.

Here's the third costume she's done, and a picture of both of them.

Unf. I don't know which to do. Both will be hard - the newest one will be HELLA HARD. But... I *WANT IT*. I mean, look at the LEAVES, and the WRIST-THINGS, and how in the hell would I find fabric like that, and I WANT TO MAKE IT SO BADLY. I love easy costumes, but sometimes I see something that makes me want to run out to the fabric store.

HELP WHICH ONE IS COOLER WHICH SHOULD I MAKE

I WILL GO TO THIS DAMN CON

I WILL GO TO ANIMEUSA, DAMMIT. I WILL SOMEHOW GET THERE. I NEED A CON SO FREAKING BAD.

Anyway :D My next costume is definitely Haruhi Suzumiya (cosplaylab link)from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. (ANN encyclopedia link)

EVERYONE loves Haruhi. And if you don't, you haven't seen it.

Inspiration: Haruhi is my IDOL. She TRICKED the computer club into giving her club a computer, by threatening to accuse them of ****-****! (is that enough stars?). She GRABS members out of the halls. And on top of all that... SHE IS GOD. How freaking AWESOME. This is the BEST SERIES EVER.

Favorite Aspect: I love how different the school uniform is - the collar comes so far down, but has a part underneath! That'll be so much easier than trying to figure out how far down to go without showing cleavage.

Least Favorite Aspect: This color is impossible to find -.- I don't know why! It should be easy! WHERE IS IT AUGH.

Easiest Task: Hair / accessories, as usuall with school uniforms. Hairbow, SOS-DAN arm band, ect.

Hardest Task: Finding that color. Also, figuring out how to make the skirt flattering so I can tuck in the shirt. This sounds stupid, but it's very important to make things fit to your body, especially if you're large.

There will be more info, I just don't have enough brain-power to think on it.

I posted pics of my MiniMoni costume on the H!P costumes thread on cosplay.com. The only one to respond so far was 'Chibi Ice Wolf', who said "Himemiya - Yay more cute MiniMoni-ness! X3" ... What the hell kind of patronizing crap is that? Saying that is like saying "your costume wasn't that good, but I'll respond anyway to be nice". She didn't have to say anything, and saying that made me a little upset (which then turned to me being pissed off a little). If you don't like the costume, or think it's bad, you don't have to comment just to acknowledge(sp) it. I know everyone else's costumes are better than mine, but dammit I worked hard, and I don't need that kind of crap.

In other news... I didn't get a lot of pictures taken this year. And honestly, it was really good. I didn't have to worry about having bad pictures online, or looking okay, or weight or anything. I could just *be in costume*. It was nice. Not a lot of people knew MiniMoni, and I didn't wear Ryomou for long. It's really nice wearing costumes that people don't recognize, because I can tell them about my favorite new series.

I've also discovered that dresses are much more comfy than any other type of costume. Bwahaha.

Next costumes I'd like to try:
-- Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
-- someone from Air (can't decide who)
-- Rika Ishikawa (H!P) in her Ecomoni outfit (the first one). Just so I can run around singing "Help! Help! Dangerous Ass! Help Help! Jesus Christ!" (only people who've heard the song will understand that). Absolutely NO ONE will know who I am, but I really want to try making the dress, and it looks cute.
-- Yomiko Readman (Read Or Die OVA).

There are lots of pros and cons to each one, I'll go over them all later. I'm late!

You guys, I have never been this behind in costume-making before. I won't be sleeping much tonight or tomorrow x_x I have work this morning, and school wed. evening. So that basically gives me late tonight, tomorrow morning, late tomorrow, and thursday morning. HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT. *And* I haven't finished stuff for my panel, *and* I haven't finished the music mix for the skit.

What I *do* have done, is accessories, fabric, and patterns. In theory, I won't have to buy anything else. Unless by some stroke of heaven, I finish everything in time to do the Haruhi costume.

... Ew. I just sneezed everywhere. I BETTER NOT BE GETTING SICK.

The skit is very simple this year.  There's only four of us, and we're not going for a win.  I'm being MiniMoni, Susan is Ayumi Hamasaki, and Mary is 3ninMatsuri.  We're playing a (really short) bit of the chorus of our songs and dancing.  And Nick is dancing like a white boy in the background.  Basically, we'd rather hang out with other cosplayers and dance some on stage than wait in the cosplay line.  No one's gonna know what we're doing anyway ^_^;;

I'm beginning to freak out a little. Animazement is in less than two weeks. Cosworx never contacted me about the wig, so now I'm trying to contact them again, saying I just want to trade my wig in. I don't care about the cost anymore, I just want the fucking wig. If I don't get the wig, I can't do the costume. I've wasted all that money preparing. And then I have to figure out a new costume to wear on friday. And I was so close to doing this costume... dammit...

AND I found out my panel is on sunday, so now I need a Jpop costume to wear sunday. DAMMIT. I can't wear Minimoni, I want to look professional and in control and ... not look 12. I could do Rika in the first Otomegumi single, I was thinking about doing that anyway...

I'm gonna start working on my minimoni outfit today... if I fuck this one up, I'll just die. I feel like I'm gonna die right now. Before anyone tries to say "it's just cosplay"...Yes, cosplay is this important to me.

fat and cosplay

I went through a short "omg I'm fat and shouldn't cosplay and will look stupid in my costumes" fit, but Nick was there and snapped me out of it ^_^ I always do that before a con.

See, everyone always says "cosplay who you want!" But it's usually assumed that that means "cosplay whoever's outfit you can fit into!" Because you can add boobs, but you can't subtract waist (comfortably, anyway). I was really inspired by this cosplayer Hikaru, who is plus-size, and makes the most gorgeous outfits. When I first started cosplaying, I was afraid to do any costume because of weight... but then I saw Hikaru, who has the most fabulous costumes and always looks so awesome. And it made me feel like "there's someone like me!", and it really compelled me to keep making costumes. I've only met her once, and I've never told her any of this ^_^; I'd be embarrassed!!

I watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I might have to cosplay her. She pushed everyone into her club, and dragged the guy around... and I turned to nick, and said "Do I do that?" and he wouldn't answer me XD So it might have to be done for a quicky costume @ animazement. It'd be a good 'nighttime' costume. I always want to change into something more relaxed on friday and saturday night. I'd wear it one of the nights, or maybe on sunday. I think I could do it pretty quickly... assuming I actually finish the ones I still have X__X

Oh! I have all my materials now! Yay hancock sale! Except I discovered my older 'overalls' pattern is too small, and I need defray-stuff, and probably some new white fabric (MY CATS GOT ALL OVER MY CUT-OUT APRON PATTERN AAAARRRGHH IT'S ALL MUDDY NOW). I need to return that wig and get a blue one, too.

I'll post a to-do list soon ^_^

Work on the costumes... well, hasn't started, but materials are being gathered! I ran around town today looking for accessories and pricing. Almost everything I need for finishing touches for Ryomou is at Hancock Fabric (for cheapish, too!) along with several things for MiniMoni. I found a better pattern for the Ryomou dress, too. for TWO DOLLARS! Heck yeah. So I now have everything I need to start my Ryomou outfit!

... and now you're saying "WHY THE HELL HAVEN'T YOU STARTED YET?!" Well, that's a good question ^_^; I should go work!

OH!  I was watching old H!P videos, and I realized, the outfits Coconuts Musume wear in the Tokonatsu Musume video are pink shirts, legwarmers, some wear armwarmers... AND PINK PLAID SKIRTS!!  I have lots of pink plaid!  I can totally make that and call it cosplay.  I'll get some of the other girls to wear it too, and we'll be Mountain Musume!  ... or something.  Most likely I'll just make it and wear it at the dance or for the panel ^_^;

SPEAKING OF THE PANEL! I still want to make Rika's Ecomoni dress. I have her wig, and the hat... Should I do that, or something simple?

Rika Ishikawa, Otome Gumi, "Ai no Sono ~Touch My Heart~"

Rika Ishikawa, Ecomoni

Which do you think? I REALLY want to do the Ecomoni one. I guess it all depends on money. I think the Otome Gumi one is a good cheapy-one for if I run out of time/money.

I just had my first official "con dream" of the season.

My costumes weren't even close to finished, and it was the day before, and I didn't get a chance to finish them! So I was like "I'll just take old costumes", and I fix up the hood of my White Mage outfit on the drive there.
So it was the morning to leave, and I STILL hadn't found out what time my panel was gonna happen, so I was running around that morning freaking out trying to get people to leave. We all were in just one car, and I didn't drive.

So we get on the road, and I realize "OH MY GOD ONE OF THE GIRLS COMING WITH US NEVER CALLED US YESTERDAY." She didn't know when we were leaving, and she was supposed to ride with us!! I call her, her mom answers and says she's still asleep, and that she'll be up around 7 or 8 to meet with us. And I say "Well, the problem is, WE'VE ALREADY LEFT." And the girl hears that over the phone and says "OMG". Her mom wants us to turn around, and the guy driving says "Hell no I'm not turning around". So when we stop for breakfast, her mom drives her to where we are (only about an hour out, lucky for her).

ONWARD TO THE CON! We get to the room, which I don't get a key for. I HATE not getting a key. We find out my panel is on sunday, so we rushed for no reason x.x I get ready to put my costume on... and realize I've left ALL MY OTHER COSTUMES AT HOME. I freak out, and am running around going "I don't have a costume for saturday! I can't run around a con without a costume! I'll feel naked!!!" I call my mom, she says "It's okay, I'll meet you halfway" (Which for some reason is only and hour out, even though it's a 5 hour drive). THANK GOD.

But then I realize... I DIDN'T DRIVE THERE. FUCK. I CAN'T MEET HER BECAUSE I DIDN'T DRIVE. And everyone else is running around the con, I can't ask them to leave! GAH! I run around asking for someone to lend me their car. The guy who drove says "Okay, I'll go with you", and I drive his car with him in the passenger seat (Why he didn't drive, I don't know). I don't know how to drive a stick, but his car magically became an automatic :D

We meet up with my mom, I try to figure out how many costumes I can put together with what I have, and we eat ice cream. And then I woke up.

Bad con dreams = I need to get my ass in gear!

I can't cosplay Magical Maid Koyori. Why, you ask?
Because Bishi is doing it.

I always say "Who cares if someone else does your costume?" But... you don't understand. Bish is like, the ultimate cute. She's liquid strawberry pocky. It's not like it's a competition, but... I just can't be wearing the same costume as her at the same con, it's too much pressure. In comparison, I will be "the fat Koyori", and I can't take that right now. I'm already wearing a super-short skirt, and a costume of a 12-year-old japanese girl in orange. I really love the costume and the character but.... I mean, Look at her! How will I look against that?!

... I don't know, guys. What do you think? Besides "cosplay whoever you want!", I'd like actual opinions. Be brutal, please. Anonymous commenting is fine.

Besides, I can spend that time and money on my other costumes.

Someday, I'd like to cosplay a female Quincy (from bleach). Not a female version of Ishida, just a random Quincy.

I've got my notebook of cosplay notes ready for the three costumes I'm definitely doing for AZ... well, possibly just two. Honestly, if I don't get the money, I'm not going to be cosplaying something new at all X_X But I HAVE to do Minimoni, damnit!

I made some pink legwarmers. Once I get good, I'm gonna ebay some. I have pink plaid, yellow plaid, and some other colors. I need to make some hippy shit, I have lots of ribbon.

I want to do Magical Maid Koyori from Komugi-chan. I also want to do Ryomou Shinmei from Ikkitousen. I think I have to make a choice.

Ryomou:

Koyori:

I'm not sure which is better for me -- badass or cute rival. I want to do both. But I think I'll have to make a decision.

I love both series, outfits, and characters equally. I think they're equally hard. Here's some pros and cons:

Ryomou:
Maid Outfit - PRO
Need boots (expensive) - CON
Have some fabric that can possibly be used, assuming I have enough - PRO
Tight fit, little to no way to make it loose-fitting and still be accurate - CON
Walking around with an eyepatch on - CON (won't be able to wear glasses, either)
*MUST* buy new wig - CON
Pro 2; Con 4.

Koyori:
Thigh-High stockings - CON
Goodwill-able shoes - PRO
Can possibly just dye my purple wig - PRO
Very specific fit needed - CON
Bust-emphasis - PRO (note at bottom)
Cute side-kick animal - PRO
More Accessories - CON
BIGGER 'ASS BOW' - PRO (thanks gyp XD)
Pro 5; Con 3.

By these standards, Koyori wins. But what do y'all think?

**Bust-Emphasis... well, the character has big boobs. Boobs are fakeable, of course. But as a plus-size cosplayer, it's honestly the only thing my body has going for me (♥)**
